The water flows through this aquifer at an astounding rate. (No offense, but Portland's water is nearly undrinkable--tastes awful. San Francisco water isn't much better.) Many people drink this water in bottles from grocery stores, taken straight from the tap in Spokane or Coeurd'Alene, ID.
